List of Disability Services Offered by Adult Learning Programs of Alaska

Supported Employment: Job Coaching

"Supported Employment Habilitation", or "Job Coaching" as it is also commonly known, has to do with assisting someone with finding a paid position and maintaining it once they are hired. This service is provided for persons for whom competitive employment at or above the minimum wage is unlikely and who, because of their disabilities, require ongoing support, to perform in a work setting. "Ongoing support" means any level of on-the job supervision and/or training that is provided by the Job Coach, and which is above and beyond what might be provided by the employee's supervisor. Just like "Job Coaching" is a common alternate term to "Supported Employment Habilitation", the "Employment Specialist" who provides these services is also commonly referred to as the "Job Coach".

Day Habilitation

"Day Habilitation" means assistance with attaining, retaining, or improving a person's self-help, socialization, and adaptive skills as they might take place outside of the home. Types of activities which ALPA staff may assist someone in might include attending or assisting in a workout at the gym, paying bills, basic shopping, general outdoor activities for exercise, swimming, or help registering for classes.

Supported Living Services

"Supported Living Services" provide various levels of training and supervision to individuals moving into, or living in settings which maximize their independence. The plan of care describes the extent to which the person needs supervision and support, and identifies skill areas targeted for training and support. Examples of assisting through types of services are along the lines of the daily, routine tasks within the home such as how to cook a specific meal, how to operate the washing machine, and so on. This service is very similar to In-Home Supports mentioned above, with the main exception being that Supported Living Services are designed for people over the age of 18 and who are living in their own residence.

Case Management

"Case Management" is to connect consumers with community services that assist them with achieving their goals, maintaining their health, and enhancing their quality of life. Consumers have consistent access to services that improve their ability to remain in the community. Consumers have a wide variety of service providers and natural support networks. Consumers are respected and valued by those around them including those who provide support. Consumers control the flow of personal information and have the time, space and opportunity for privacy.

Intensive Active Treatment

"Intensive Active Treatment Habilitation" refers to any type of treatment or therapy as identified in an individual's plan of care, and which is scheduled for a limited period of time. It is designed to address a family problem or a personal, social, behavioral, mental, or substance abuse disorder in order to maintain or improve the person's overall level of functioning.

Medicaid Waiver Services

Mental Retardation and Developmental Disability (MRDD)

Home and Community Based Waivers allows adults with server disabilities to receive regular Medicaid services as well as additional Home and Community Based Services in lieu of institutional care. Waivers provide services that are partially paid by the federal government. In order for your services to be paid for through a waiver, you must meet specific Medicaid waiver eligibility guidelines through the Division of Public Assistance and Level of Care through DSDS. This level of care means the applicant needs the same services that would be provided in an institution serving people with mental retardation and developmental disabilities, or a nursing home.

If a person meets the strict disability guide lines, his or her income is separated from the family's income, thus making him or her eligible for Medicaid and other support services.

The purpose of waivers is to keep individuals with disabilities in their home communities and out of institutions, hospitals, and nursing facilities.
