FAQ:

Question: How do I get started?
Call 458-6792 or 452-6434 ex 23. We will provide you with an appointment.

Question: Where do I go to enroll in the MASST program?
You can stop by the Department of Labor Job Center at 7th and Barnette, Fairbanks and ask for the MASST older worker specialist, or come by Adult Learning Programs of Alaska 122 first avenue suite 201 Fairbanks, in the Tanana Chiefs Conference building.

Question: How do I find a host agency?
You will meet with the MASST program manager to find a host agency assignment that matches your occupational goals. We want to make sure you are gaining the skills that will help you reach unsubsidized employment.

Question: How many hours can I work at my host agency?
Normally MASST participants work part time 20 hours a week.

Question: What types of training do you offer?
We have many host agencies in the communities. There are numerous possibilities; we have participants working in jobs that range from clerical to facility maintenance, to gardening and tendering animals.

Question: What if I have no skills whatsoever?
That's ok; we are here to help you build your skills as you work. That's why we say it's "learn while you earn".

Question: Does MASST offer computer classes?
Yes, We have classes in Windows XP, Word, Excel, QuickBooks, Using the Internet, and Power Point. The MASST programs pays you while you attend these classes.

Question: Does MASST affect my Social Security?
No MASST is Title V federal money. You will need to check with Public Assistance to see how it affects Medicaid payments.

Question: I don't have a high school diploma. Will that affect my work at a host agency?
No, however, we will encourage and assist you to pursue a GED. Adult Learning Programs of Alaska offers in house GED preparation and GED testing.

Terms:

Participant - A senior who is eligible and working at a host agency.

Host Site Agency - A non-profit or government agency that supports the MASST program by allowing participants to work and train in their organizations.

Eligible - A person 55 or older, meets income requirements, and is an Alaska state resident.

Older Worker Specialist - MASST participant who helps with administrative functions such as intake, and financial recertification’s.

Subsidized Employment - A work experience funded by the MASST program to provide you with the skills needed to seek unsubsidized employment.

Unsubsidized Employment - Regular employment.

Non-profit - 501 C (3) tax exempt agency under the Internal Revenue Code of 1954.

Intake - Intake is used to describe the two stage process of determining eligibility and then assessment of occupational goals and capabilities.

Individual Employability Plan (IEP) - This plan serves as the guide to pursue unsubsidized employment.

Trainee/Participant/Enrollee/Client - Words used to describe those enrolled in the program.

Workforce Investment Act - Federal legislation related to training and education administered locally through the State of Alaska Department of Labor.

Job Club - Group meetings where participants learn and discuss topics such as resumes, cover letters, interview skills and the job market.
